During those years he has worked tirelessly to promote the ideals of Phi Theta Kappa on the two-year chapter level, and to provide opportunities for Phi Theta Kappa members transferring to senior institutions. Under his leadership, the University of Montevallo became a senior institution scholarship partner with Phi Theta Kappa and offers Society transfer students a generous scholarship program. A total of 22 renewable scholarships of approximately $2,200 each are available annually to Phi Theta Kappa transfer students. Gurganus was also instrumental in securing the University of Montevallo as a sponsor of the 1997 International Convention. He has served as a panelist for forums on transfer issues at two past International Conventions, In al, Gurganus has attended 11 International Conventions as a representative of the University of Montevallo. The University will sponsor a booth in the 1999 Convention's Transfer College Fair. Gurganus has also led the University of Montevallo to sponsor numerous activities for the Phi Theta Kappa Alabama Region. The University has hosted three Regional Honors Institutes on their campus. Representing Montevallo, Gurganus has hosted breakfasts at 14 Alabama regional meetings, and for three years has hosted an Alabama regional advisors luncheon. He serves as advisor of Gamma of Alabama, Montevallo's Phi Theta Kappa Alumni Association. Gurganus was inducted into Omicron Upsilon Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Alexander City State Junior College in Alexander City, Alabama, and was chosen the college's outstanding graduate. The college later became Central Alabama Community College. He holds bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Montevallo. Gurganus joined the University staff as Assistant Director of Admissions and has also served as the University's Director of Orientation. He is a member of numerous state, regional and national registrars and admissions organizations, and is chairman of the Admissions Committee of the Alabama Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers.
