Billy Wilson Presented With the 2003 Board of Directors Alumni Achievement Award

Billy Wilson

The Phi Theta Kappa Board of Directors Alumni Achievement Award is presented annually to an alumnus in recognition of his or her contributions in support of the Society's membership on the local, national and international levels.

The recipient of the 2003 Board of Directors Alumni Achievement Award is Billy Wilson, Phi Theta Kappa's Director of Honors Programs. Wilson has been a Headquarters staff member for almost 20 years, and has also served as a chapter advisor. The award is presented in recognition of Billy's outstanding leadership in the Society, with special emphasis on his contributions to honors programming, regional development and fellowship.

Billy Wilson was inducted into the Kappa Alpha Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Holmes Community College, Goodman Campus, in Goodman, Mississippi, in 1963 - but Phi Theta Kappa has been a part of his life for his entire life.

As the son of longtime Kappa Alpha advisor Mrs. Sally Wilson, Billy literally grew up with Phi Theta Kappa. He also served as a Phi Theta Kappa chapter advisor at Meridian Community College before joining the Headquarters staff in 1984.

Billy's contributions to Phi Theta Kappa have also been immeasurable. He was instrumental in developing the Five-Star Development Program, and worked closely with the Regional Coordinators to strengthen and expand the roles of Phi Theta Kappa's regions. He helped design the Mock Chapter format that has been so successful in facilitating chapter growth at regional meetings. But without doubt, his strongest sphere of influence has been in honors programs. Under his direction, the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Study Topic has achieved a new level of academic sophistication and global pertinence. By working closely with the National Collegiate Honors Council, Billy has expanded the reach of the Honors Study Topic far beyond the boundaries of the community colleges.

Billy continues to support Phi Theta Kappa financially as well as intellectually, and has contributed significantly to the Society's scholarship programs. He is helping provide for Phi Theta Kappa's future through a Planned gift to the Society.

"Few people have filled so many roles in Phi Theta Kappa, and contributed so much to our Society, as Billy Wilson," said Executive Director Rod A. Risley. "He is very deserving of the Board of Directors Alumni Achievement Award."

"Billy is someone who truly lives Phi Theta Kappa's Hallmarks," said Associate Director Mike Watson. "He is a true intellectual who inspires others by his example, who is always willing to help others, and who has the biggest heart of anyone I know. He has given his heart, soul and much of his life to Phi Theta Kappa. We are proud to honor him."
