Alumni Connect, Reconnect at NerdNation 2016

NerdNation 2016, Phi Theta Kappa’s annual convention, is coming soon, and it isn’t only for current members; there are myriad opportunities for alumni as well, and a special new alumni fellowship rate will make these opportunities even more accessible.

NerdNation will be held April 7-9 in National Harbor, Maryland. Approximately 4,000 attendees will gather for a weekend of personal, professional and leadership development, networking, recognition and more, and alumni are a welcome addition to the group.

“Support for our members doesn’t end when they leave their two-year college,” said Courtney Lange, Director of Regional and Chapter Development who oversees alumni relations. “A membership in Phi Theta Kappa is a lifetime membership, and we are constantly looking for new ways to provide new opportunities for our vast network of active alumni. NerdNation is just one more way we can support them.”

New this year is a special Alumni Fellowship Rate. Alumni can register for all alumni-related events as well as all regular NerdNation events occurring on Saturday, April 9, only, at a discounted rate of $200. Register here, and use the discount code ALUM16 at checkout.

Alumni may attend the full convention as well as the pre-convention Phi Theta Kappa Academy, which begins Wednesday, April 6 (see the full schedule). The early-bird registration rate is $319 through February 1, plus $105 for the Academy.

There are also opportunities for alumni interested in volunteering, from selling NerdNation pins to helping with on-site events.

Kevin Braden, an alumnus of the Alpha Rho Eta Chapter at Kishwaukee College in Illinois and a former International President, is currently a member of the Alumni Advisory Council (AAC). For him, attending and volunteering at Phi Theta Kappa events gives him a chance to “connect and reconnect.” He was drawn to the Society by the opportunities it offered and is now dedicated to making sure those same opportunities and more are available for current and future students.

“I have always tried to make myself available as an alum,” he said. “I’ve done everything from ushering induction ceremonies to moderating regional discussion panels and passing out pamphlets.

“For me, I get the pleasure of seeing current members enjoying the experiences I had when I was a student member. Even as an active member, I recall thinking that the one to two years of being involved was way too short, and I knew then that I wanted to always be involved in one way or another with this great organization.”

Here are a few special events for alumni:

Educational Forums

While alumni may attend any Educational Forums or Marketplace Mini Sessions, there will an Alumni Track of Educational Forums that includes special topics:

  • Competitive Edge: Your Ticket to Soft Skills

Alumni Awards

Special alumni awards will be given during the Hallmark Awards Gala on Saturday, April 9. Applications are due February 11.

The Alumni Association Award of Merit recognizes an alumni association (community-based, senior institution-based or region-based) that has been exemplary in meeting the mission of Phi Theta Kappa’s Alumni Association, conducting outstanding programs for the benefits of Phi Theta Kappa members.

The Alumni Award of Appreciation is a way for chapters and regions to publicly show gratitude to supportive alumni.
