Advisors Invited to Pre-Conference at NISOD

Phi Theta Kappa is partnering with NISOD’s 2016 International Conference on Teaching and Leadership Excellence to offer a free pre-conference training opportunity for all chapter advisors.

NISOD is a membership organization committed to promoting and celebrating excellence in teaching, learning and leadership at community and technical colleges. Its annual conference will be May 28-31 in Austin, Texas. For the first time, Phi Theta Kappa will host an Advisor Pre-Conference on Sunday, May 29, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“NISOD is very pleased to begin our partnership with Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society,” said Edward J. Leach, NISOD’s Executive Director. “We believe that Phi Theta Kappa’s goal of developing honors program directors and faculty who are well-equipped to recognize and encourage scholarship among two-year college students aligns perfectly with NISOD’s mission to promote and celebrate excellence in teaching, learning and leadership at those same institutions.

“We look forward to working with Phi Theta Kappa in the years to come to further our shared goal of increasing student success.”

There is no cost to attend the Advisor Pre-Conference, and Phi Theta Kappa advisors will also enjoy a discounted rate to participate in the full NISOD Conference. Advisors are not required to register for the entire NISOD Conference in order to attend the Pre-Conference.

Tentative topics to be covered include

  • Our Success is Your Success: Phi Theta Kappa’s 92% Student Success Rate
  • What Does an Advisor Do?
  • Online Chapter Management
  • Motivating Members
  • Engaging in Phi Theta Kappa Programs: How and Why

“While the Advisor Pre-Conference will especially benefit new advisors, any advisor may attend,” said Jennifer Stanford, Phi Theta Kappa’s Chief Student Engagement Officer. “This two-in-one professional development opportunity allows advisors to be better-prepared Phi Theta Kappa advisors while also furthering their educational skills at the NISOD Conference.”

Space for the Advisor Pre-Conference is limited and advanced registration is required by May 20. Learn more about the pre-conference, and register here: shop.nisod.org/ptk/.

For 2016, the Advisor Pre-Conference will replace Advisor Institutes, which began in 2013 as a way for both new and seasoned Phi Theta Kappa advisors to delve deeper into Society programming and chapter management. Advisors will find other training and educational opportunities this year through a variety of means:

  • More webinars on a range of topics including Membership Reporting
  • The launch of an Advisor Online Curriculum site, which will include video tutorials (coming this summer)
  • The creation of an online Honors in Action “Coaching Guide"
  • Regional Advisor Conferences
  • Advisor Educational Forum Track at NerdNation 2016
  • Advisor Sessions at 2016 Honors Institute

Also in 2016, Phi Theta Kappa will host its first Regional Officer Institute, a targeted development opportunity specifically for regional officers. The Institute will be held July 24-28 at Millsaps College and at the Center for Excellence, Phi Theta Kappa’s Headquarters, both located in Jackson, Mississippi. More information about the Regional Officer Institute will be announced soon.
