17 October 2016 Dr. Mary Hood Texas Region Scholar Receives a $1,500 Scholarship Tweet October 17, 2016 Press Room scholarships, Texas Region 0 Jackson, Mississippi – Kaci Lusk, a student at Weatherford College in Texas, has been selected by Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society to receive a $1,500 scholarship as the 2016 Dr. Mary Hood Texas Region Scholar. A nursing major who has earned a 3.75 grade point average, Lusk is a mother of two who serves as the Honors in Action Chair for her Phi Theta Kappa chapter and an Ambassador of Hope for LifeGift, an organ procurement program in Texas. She hopes to earn advanced degrees and someday work in the organ transplant center where she donated one of her kidneys in 2013. The Dr. Mary Hood Texas Region Scholarship is presented to the Texas applicant with the highest score from Phi Theta Kappa’s Spring Scholarship Application, which provides new Phi Theta Kappa members with financial resources to help defray educational expenses while enrolled in associate degree programs. Dr. Mary Hood served as Texas Regional Coordinator for 18 years and was a member of Phi Theta Kappa’s Board of Directors at the time of her death in 2011. The Dr. Mary Hood Texas Region Scholarship was established in her memory, providing scholarships to Phi Theta Kappa members in Texas who are still attending community college. Phi Theta Kappa is the premier honor society recognizing the academic achievement of community college students and helping them grow as scholars and leaders.
