CollegeFish.org Awards Two $1,000 Scholarships

CollegeFish.org, Phi Theta Kappa's online college completion and transfer planning tool, recently awarded two $1,000 scholarships to members who participated in Community College Completion and Transfer Month in October.

The scholarship recipients are Yuning Qiao from Bluegrass Community and Technical College in Kentucky and Mackenzie Bay from Weatherford Community College in Texas. They will each receive a $1,000 scholarship to aid in the completion of their associate degree and/or their transfer to a four-year college.

The scholarships were made possible by the support of the following four-year colleges and universities who served as sponsors of Community College Completion and Transfer Month:

  • Spring Hill College, Alabama
  • Menlo College, California
  • Loyola Marymount University, California
  • Cornell College, Iowa
  • Elmhurst College, Illinois

  • Hamline University, Minnesota
  • Mississippi University for Women, Mississippi
  • Belhaven University, Mississippi
  • Rowan University, New Jersey
  • Drew University, New Jersey

  • Long Island University, New York
  • John Carroll University, Ohio
  • Warner Pacific College, Oregon
  • DeSales University, Pennsylvania
  • University of Texas at Tyler, Texas

  • Dallas Baptist University, Texas
  • Westminster College, Utah
  • Champlain College, Vermont

"We are grateful for the generous support of these colleges and universities, and we are proud to join with them and support college completion and transfer for these two students," said Ron Filipowicz, Phi Theta Kappa's Director of College Relations. "Student success and college completion are at the heart of what we at Phi Theta Kappa do, and we are excited to be able to offer programs and tools such as CollegeFish.org to help make college completion and transfer easier for every two-year college student."

Community College Completion and Transfer Month featured themed weeks relating to college completion and transfer. Webinars were hosted throughout the month on such topics as Scholarship Tips & Tricks and Resume & Essay 101, in addition to general information on CollegeFish.org such as how to set up a profile and find your best-fit scholarships and colleges.

Students could qualify for the scholarship by creating a CollegeFish.org profile; logging in to CollegeFish.org in the month of October; liking the CollegeFish Facebook page and posting their name, college and email; and attending a webinar and providing their name, college and email. Qiao and Bay were randomly selected from more than 2,100 participating students.

"When students invest time and energy into exploring the transfer scholarships and opportunities in CollegeFish.org, there is great potential for reward," said Jennifer Blalock, Phi Theta Kappa's Chief Student Support Officer. "Through events like Community College Completion and Transfer Month, our goal is to make sure all two-year college students know the tools that are available to them through CollegeFish.org so they can receive the greatest reward possible."

Two more $1,000 scholarships will be given away in February 2015 as CollegeFish.org hosts Fishpalooza Financial Literacy February. The month-long event will feature contests, webinars and more to master the basics of personal finance, college savings and making smart college tuition financial decisions. More details will be shared in the coming weeks on Facebook and in the Golden Key News Briefs email.

And, be sure to check out CollegeFish.org's "Twelve Days of Transfer," beginning December 1. Each day, a different Fish Fanatic - Phi Theta Kappa and two-year college alumni - will share a transfer tip on the CollegeFish Facebook page. Be sure to "like" the page so you don't miss out on a single tip.

Comment on the tip and the day's trivia question to be entered into a drawing for one of 13 gift cards. One student will win each day. There will be additional chances to win live by attending a CollegeFish webinar on December 2 and 9. Times will be announced soon.
