The Organizational & Functional Impact of Culture & Globalization

International Business HR Unit 2

In this unit, you will be able to recognize the impacts that globalization have on an organization and the execution of a Human Resources strategy. You will explore the key dimensions of culture and the role it plays in global HR, and will use real-world case studies to illustrate best practices for embedding an understanding of culture into HR activities across borders.

You will learn:

  • Positive early HR interventions as a company moves from local to international
  • Conscious and data-driven choices regarding HR organizations
  • To lead HR activities with a fact-based understanding of the key dimensions of culture
  • How to identify the nature of culture as a driver of human behavior and apply it on an organizational level

Global Staffing

International Business HR Unit 3

Educational standards, workforce legislation and hiring practices vary across different parts of the world. This unit explores the staffing choices available to global companies, the issues associated with them and the effective use of expatriates to support organizational goals. You will discover the various philosophies and methodologies used when determining staffing needs, so you can make conscious choices when staffing across borders.

You will learn:

  • How to delineate different drivers for staffing choices internationally and articulate the philosophies that drive those choices
  • To articulate the range of staffing options available to global companies
  • About the impact of various types of innovation on an entrepreneurial venture
  • The reasons for expatriate failure and describe methods used to achieve expatriate success
  • About the nature of the adjustment cycle from expatriation to repatriation

Phi Theta Kappa ILIAD Capstone Unit

Students will explore the opportunities for experiential international education and analyze them to identify an opportunity that is best aligned to personal and career goals. Students will set learning goals, develop a timeline and actions required to meet goals, and develop well-crafted essay drafts that prepare them to complete actual application processes for programs as well as scholarships that fund study abroad experiences, such as the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship.

You will learn:

  • International Experiential Education – Students develop awareness and are inspired to consider different types of international study experiences.
  • Support Team – Students assemble a support team and learn the value of networking and communication to produce a plan of international study.
  • Strategy and Success – Students personalize an approach to international study that is meaningful and authentic to their interests, strengths, and goals.
  • Forming a Plan – Students select a scholarship opportunity (or other pathway) to pursue and develop a plan that includes a clear timeline and activities.
  • Operationalizing a Plan – Students execute their plans and submit scholarship applications with the support of their network to maximize their chance of receiving a scholarship to study abroad.

FAQ

Question Policy
What do I need to to receive Unit credit from my community college ? Credit policies will vary by institution, however, you must complete and pass both the International Honors Certificate Unit in addition to the Iliad Certificate Unit in order to receive credit. Please check with your community college to determine the exact path to credit.
How is the International Honors Certificate designed? Each International Honors Certificate Unit is specialized content from a top university and contains 3 Units. Each Unit has an end of Unit Quiz which must be passed prior to moving forward. At the end of the Unit, you must pass a certificate exam in order to finish. 
What is the Iliad certificate? The Iliad certificate unit is designed by PTK to prepare students to complete actual application processes for programs as well as scholarships that fund study abroad experiences, such as the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship.
How is the International Honors Certificate and Iliad Unit graded? Both the IHC Units and the Iliad Unit are pass/fail in nature and the student must achieve at least 80% to pass.  Students will need to pass the End of Certificate Exam and the End of Unit Iliad Quiz  to move forward. 
How many times can I take a End of Unit quiz in the International Honors Certificate ?  The Unit quiz may be taken an unlimited number of times
How many times can I take the end of International Honors certificiate exam? Students have two attempts to pass the end-of-certificate exam. If you don't achieve an 80% necessary by the second try then you will not pass the International Honors Certificate and not be eligible for credit. 
Can I drop the International Honors certificate Unit? Add/ drop policies will vary by institution, please check with your local community college. For fall 2015 specific dates, please check the FAQ
By when do I have to finish the International Honors Certificate Unit + Iliad unit? You will have to the end of your semester by which you will need to finish the International Honors Certificate Unit. Please check with your local community college. For fall 2015 specific dates, please check the FAQ
