2012-2013 Phi Theta Kappa International Vice President, Division IV, Gail San Diego

Gail San Diego, Division IV International Vice President, is a member of Alpha Xi Beta Chapter, College of Southern Nevada, North Las Vegas Campus, in Nevada.

Gail is a Biological Sciences major who plans to transfer to Columbia University, where she will pursue her doctorate in medicine with the hopes of becoming a cardiologist. She plans to start an organization that helps patients with heart cancer, and she also wants to mentor undergraduate students planning to pursue careers in medicine.

Opportunity for close interaction with professors, as well as lower tuition costs, drew Gail to a community college, where she was introduced to Phi Theta Kappa through a poster on her college's bulletin board. She set a goal to get the GPA required for membership and was proud to receive her invitation. Gail worked to become an ambassador for Phi Theta Kappa, serving first as a chapter officer before becoming president. She has completed requirements for Level Five in Five Star Competitive Edge.

Gail feels that the stereotype of a community college - that it's only for students who aren't ready for universities, or that it's for older students seeking to learn a trade - can hold a student back from achieving his or her full potential. But she believes supportive professors and membership in Phi Theta Kappa helped steer her in the right direction to succeed.

Gail grew up in the Philippines and enjoys playing badminton and volleyball, and she was recognized by Nevada U.S. Senator Dean Heller for being an outstanding servant leader in the Las Vegas metropolitan area.
