2012-2013 Phi Theta Kappa International President, Ryan Palmore

Ryan Austin Palmore, International President, is a member of Alpha Phi Omega Chapter, Ivy Tech Community College, Gary Campus, in Indiana.

An English major, he plans to study for a baccalaureate degree in Philosophy and Creative Writing, and is undecided on a transfer institution. Ryan Austin plans to become a philosophy or psychology professor and hopes to publish creative nonfiction.

He originally entered community college to complete a math credential, but chose to complete his associate degree after ascertaining the value of Ivy Tech based on educational, financial and experimental benefits.

After speaking with a chapter advisor, Ryan Austin turned to the Phi Theta Kappa website for information before deciding to join. He served as a chapter vice president and as Phi Theta Kappa's Student Government representative before being elected chapter president.

Ryan Austin is a college tutor and supplemental instructor, which has given him some insights into a challenge faced by all community colleges, how to serve underprepared students, especially those lacking English composition and math skills.

Completion rates are an ongoing challenge, he noted.

Ryan Austin received a 2011 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholarship, various scholarships by his college, and has also won writing awards. He is a drummer, a poet and participates in spoken word poetry. Ryan Austin is a member of the College Democrats Club and the Student Government Association.
