ACA Secretary Nomination Process

Advisors attending the annual International Convention elect a new ACA Secretary. During the three-year term as an ACA Officer, the advisor elected to serve as Secretary will automatically move up to Vice Chairman and eventually Chairman.

Process

The International Constitution and Bylaws call for the election of an ACA Secretary annually, but does not expound on the nomination process. The following process has been adopted by past ACA Officers:

A call for nominations for ACA Secretary will be announced in the Golden Key News Briefs (GKNB). Nominations shall be made to any of the three current ACA Officers. ACA Officers cannot nominate a candidate, but they can encourage others to nominate or be nominated.

The nominator should gain permission from the nominee before submitting the nomination to any one of the ACA Officers by a predetermined deadline. After confirming the nominee has agreed to be nominated, the ACA Officers will forward the nominee's name to Advisor Education Specialist Barb Murray at Headquarters.

Four advisors will appear on the final ballot for the ACA Secretary post, one from each of the Society's four Divisions. The current ACA officers make the final selection of the four nominees based on the nominations received. If there is more than one nomination from a Division, the ACA Officers will determine who will be on the ballot. The Advisor Education Specialist will notify any nominees (and their nominators) who were not chosen as candidates. If the ACA Officers do not receive at least one nomination from each Division, they will recruit candidates.

After the four candidates have been determined, Headquarters will prepare a flyer featuring a photo and pertinent information about each candidate. The flyer will be distributed at the International Convention prior to the ACA election. ACA candidates are prohibited from distributing any other campaign literature or paraphernalia.

While other campaign materials cannot be distributed, the ACA candidates will have an opportunity to visit with other advisors during a designated time period in the Academic Marketplace at the International Convention.
