"Green" Site, City Host Honors Institute

San Francisco State University in California, site of the 2008 International Honors Institute, continually improves its recycling efforts. Recently the university reported that in 2007 the campus community's recycling programs diverted 77 percent of its waste from landfills, exceeding the 75 percent goal set by the City of San Francisco to be achieved by 2010. Newly implemented innovations at SFSU include single-stream recycling, composting and building materials recycling. San Francisco also is the first city to ban plastic bag use by large grocery stores, in an effort to keep the bags away from wildlife and out of landfills, and to prevent contamination and jamming machines used for sorting recycled materials.
