Evelyn Beck, an English instructor, has served as chapter advisor for the Omega Chi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Piedmont Technical College since 1993 and received the Paragon Award for her outstanding work as an advisor. She has received numerous other awards for writing, teaching and community service, including the Democracy in Higher Education Prize from the National Education Association for her essay "The Mysterious Territory of Distance Learning"; the Presidential Medallion for Excellence at Piedmont Technical College; and the South Carolina Technical Education Association's Educator of the Year Award.

Beck will use her Mosal Award to complete a project entitled "Creative Nonfiction and the Community College Story." The project will enable her to improve her skills as a writer of creative nonfiction so that she may better tell the story of the community college.
