Cathryn Cates, a biology instructor, has served as chapter advisor for the Alpha Omicron Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Tyler Junior College since 1997 and received the Robert Giles Distinguished Advisor Award for her outstanding work as an advisor. Other recognitions include the Pirtle Teaching Chair, the Mabel Williams Science/Mathematics Teaching Chair, the NISOD Teacher Excellence Award, and recognition as a Mattie Alice Scroggin Baker Excellence in Teaching Award Finalist.
Cates will use her Mosal Award to complete a project entitled "Ecology of the Colorado Plateau." The project will allow her to enhance the curricula of environmental science and general biology by investigating the ecological, geomorphologic, and natural history of the Colorado Plateau region of New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah.
