A Phi Theta Kappa alumna of Theta Sigma Chapter at Northwest Mississippi Community College in Senatobia, Mississippi, Shanks is also a graduate from Mississippi State University. She is a member of the Board of the Mississippi Economic Council and was recognized as one of Mississippi's leading business women in 1997.Shanks received the Board of Directors Alumni Achievement Award for her unyielding support of Phi Theta Kappa's first Evening of Arts and Authors, which honored Nota Bene student authors and featured an address by opera legend Beverly Sills.
