6. Two Associations Welcomed
Phi Theta Kappa welcomes two new University-Based Alumni Associations!

University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee chartered this fall with 21 new members. Student Affairs Coordinator Anne Dobson will serve as the advisor, and Michelle Reynolds of Nu Zeta chapter at State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota will serve as the charter president.
Xi of Texas at the University of Texas - Tyler, was re-chartered during the Texas Leadership Conference. Advisors will be Ona Tolliver, Director of Student Life and Leadership, and Alpha Omicron (Tyler Junior College) alumna Sarah Bowdin, Director of Admissions (pictured with Dr. Howard Patterson, Vice President for Student Affairs). Gigi Delk, Alpha Omicron advisor, and Alumni Association Council Member Kenneth Ruemke assisted with the chartering ceremony.
University-based associations make up more than half of the 110 associations. They help recruit Phi Theta Kappans and ease the transition from community college to university life. To learn more about chartering an association on a university campus or in your community, contact Courtney Taylor or visit the chartering website.
7. Leadership Lesson: Servant Leaders are Hero-Makers
We often identify leaders as heroes. Robert Kelley said “Be less of a hero and more of a hero-maker” in his book, The Power of Followership, but it is a simple way to explain a philosophy of leadership as much as it is an explanation of effective followership. The philosophy of leadership it expresses is servant leadership.
After learning a great deal about the organization to become the expert, acting as a role model, instilling passion, providing direction and guidance, persevering to create consistency and high standards, it’s easy to assume that a leader is a hero, but this list leaves out some key elements of leadership that make it servant leadership. As Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner have noted, leadership “choice is not based on authority, but upon the leader’s perceived capacity to serve a need.” If you are successful at sharing the stage and seek always to help others become better at what they are doing, building competence, capacity, and confidence — you are leading as a servant leader. Kent Keith in The Case for Servant Leadership has listed the key practices of servant leadership:
- Self awareness - taking time to reflect, knowing one’s emotional responses and remembering that moods are contagious
- Listening - identify needs
- Changing the Pyramid - broaden the top of the traditional organizational pyramid so that more people have leadership opportunities and the leaders are “first among equals” and not the sole actors
- Developing colleagues - as Robert Greenleaf wrote, “Do those served grow as persons? Do they, while being served, become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become servants?” which improves the capacity of the organization to perform the mission
- Coaching, not controlling - control to achieve compliance does not create passion
- Unleashing the energy and intelligence of others
- Foresight - this is the “lead that the servant leader has” by reflecting and achieving insight about how the past and present connect to the positive future envisioned.
These practices are empowering and make new heroes.
