Phi Theta Kappa Charters First Chapter in Republic of Palau
On March 22, Phi Theta Kappa increased its international community by expanding
into a new nation, when a chapter was chartered at Palau Community College
in the Republic of Palau.
The Northern Pacific island nation
of Palau - 7,000 miles away from Los Angeles - was a United States-administered
territory until 1994, when it became an independent nation. The islands
had been claimed by various European countries since 1885, and after World
War II, passed from Japanese control to become a United Nations trust territory.
Thirty
Palau Community College students became charter members of the new Beta
Omicron Zeta Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, and the chapter will be represented
at the International Convention
in Seattle.
For the first time, the official flag of the Republic
of Palau will be proudly carried in the Opening Ceremonies Parade of Flags,
by charter member Shelley Remengesau.
Eric Chong, Phi Theta
Kappa advisor at Guam Community College, represented International Headquarters
during the chartering ceremony and presented the Phi Theta Kappa key plaque
to Dr. Patrick Tellei, president of Palau Community College.
"We
believe that Phi Theta Kappa's expansion into the Northern Pacific island
nations will contribute greatly to the global reach and diversity of our
organization," said Phi Theta Kappa Executive Director Rod Risley. Risley
noted that charters are pending at community colleges in the Federated
States of Micronesia and in the Marshall Islands. A delegation from the
College of Micronesia and from American Samoa Community College, home
of the oldest Northern Pacific chapter, will also attend the Convention.
Risley
credited the efforts of Dr. H. delos Santos, president of Guam Community
College, as instrumental in raising awareness about Phi Theta Kappa and
its benefits among the regional community college presidents in Micronesia.
