American Cancer Society Receives Alliance for Educational Excellence Distinguished Partner Award
The American Cancer Society
is the 2007 recipient of the Alliance for Educational Excellence Distinguished
Partner Award.
The American Cancer Society has worked with
Phi Theta Kappa since 2002, and has provided outstanding resources to educate
members and community college students about the need for an engaged citizenry.
ACS serves as an international resource for information on cancer research
and statistics.
ACS has also recognized Phi Theta Kappa and
its chapters for their efforts in the fight against cancer. Phi Theta Kappa
has twice been named a Top Collegiate Contributor to Relay For Life, the
major fundraising program for ACS.
ACS also supports Phi Theta
Kappa's International Convention, and has been instrumental in securing
such prominent speakers as journalists Linda Ellerbee and Cokie Roberts,
Grammy winner Patti LaBelle and singer and cancer survivor Kevin Sharp.
"Phi
Theta Kappa is pleased to present to the American Cancer Society its highest
honor available to organizations, foundations and corporations," said
Phi Theta Kappa Executive Director Rod Risley, in announcing the award.
Risley
made the presentation during Phi Theta Kappa's 89th International Convention
in Nashville, Tennessee. Accepting for the American Cancer Society were
Dr. Anna Johnson-Winegar, Chairperson of the American Cancer Society
Board of Directors; Reuel Johnson, National Vice President of Relay For
Life; and Kristen Solt, Vice President for Hope Lodge, a network of free,
temporary housing facilities operated by ACS for cancer patients undergoing
treatment.
Previous recipients of the Alliance for Educational
Excellence Distinguished Partner Award have included the Jack Kent Cooke
Foundation, the American Association of Community Colleges and USA TODAY.
