How to Prepare for the Honors in Action Academy
Are you attending Phi Theta Kappa's first-ever Honors
in Action Academy? Here's what you need to know.
The
Honors in Action Academy will be held April 15-16, just prior to Phi Theta
Kappa's 2009 Convention, at the Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center
in Grapevine, Texas.
The Academy starts at 8:45 am on Wednesday,
April 15, in Grapevine A&C. On Wednesday afternoon, all Academy participants
will take part in an Honors in Action beautification and clean-up event
in partnership with Keep Grapevine Beautiful. The 2008-09 International
Officers will be presenting the research at the Academy for this project
entitled, "Community Disaster Recovery in Grapevine, Texas, 2007-Present."
Participants
may choose a level of activity from three project sites. Transportation
will be provided to sites away from the Convention hotel property.
Participants
will sign up for the beautification/cleanup project at Convention Registration
on Tuesday, April 14, or early Wednesday morning, April 15. Participants
are strongly encouraged to study their options (below) and be prepared
to choose a level of participation.
Participants should wear
long pants, closed toe shoes and long sleeves, especially those who will
be working in wooded areas. Based on weather conditions, layered clothing
is recommended.
Take ponchos or rain gear with you just as a precaution,
as rain is not in the current forecast, but participants may wish to watch
the weather. Participants should come to the Academy dressed for the Honors
in Action Project as there will be no time to change between the morning session
and the departure to the worksites.
Also, please bring water
bottles and sunscreen. Keep Grapevine Beautiful will have drink stations
set up for water refills. Hats, gloves and tools will be provided.
Chapter
members are encouraged to wear Phi Theta Kappa t-shirts, and Operation
Green t-shirts may be purchased during the Academy from the Society's
Recognition Services. A total of $2 from the sale of every Operation Green
t-shirt will be donated to Keep Grapevine Beautiful.
Participants
will also be asked to sign an indemnity waiver before participating.
