Society Alum Wes Moore to Speak at Democratic Convention

Phi Theta Kappa alumnus and Foundation Trustee Wes Moore is scheduled to speak tonight (Thursday, August 28) at the Democratic National Convention in Denver, prior to the address by party Presidential nominee Barack Obama.

Moore, whose Convention participation was coordinated by the Obama campaign, is slated to speak between 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm Denver time (MST), according to the Democratic National Convention's online schedule. Coverage of Moore's participation is expected to air on PBS stations and C-SPAN and possibly other networks.

Moore is scheduled to appear in tonight's American Voices segment, a daily feature highlighting citizens promoting positive change, based on each Convention day's theme. Tonight's theme is "Change You Can Believe In."

Moore was also one of three military combat "Veterans for Obama" who participated in Wedneday's Democratic Convention panel discussion on the conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan. Recently Moore was invited to participate in a nationwide conference on Race and Reconciliation in America, held at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., on July 24 and 25.

Moore became a member of Phi Theta Kappa at Valley Forge Military College in Pennsylvania. He was president of his Phi Theta Kappa chapter and of the student body, and also served as Regimental Commander, the highest ranking cadet on campus. While a student at Valley Forge, Moore completed the Phi Theta Kappa Leadership Development Studies course.

Moore received a scholarship to attend Johns Hopkins University, graduating Phi Beta Kappa with a double degree in International Relations and Economics. He studied International Relations at Oxford University in England as a Rhodes Scholar, and is a former White House Fellow.

A captain in the U.S. Army Reserve, Moore completed a tour of active duty in Afghanistan and earned a Bronze Star medal.

Moore served as moderator of the 2008 Phi Theta Kappa International Convention's Conversation with CNN's Christiane Amanpour and former State Department official James Rubin. Moore was a panelist for the 2006 Convention's Conversation with former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright.
