Check
out these ideas for planning and producing a successful Honors Seminar
presentation and discussion, and general tips on funding, all provided
by chapter advisors:
* Consider asking the college media center
or community library system to purchase the DVDs or contribute toward the
subscription price.
* Schedule the presentations during the
early afternoon to accommodate commuter students and again in the evenings
for working and night students.
* Use the posters supplied to
subscribers to publicize the seminars on campus and in the community.
*
Work with area civic groups - Friends of the Library, community development
associations and community leaders - to develop an invitation list.
*
Invite honor society members from area high schools, and approach high
school faculty about offering extra credit to attendees.
*
Invite a professor with expertise in the seminar subject to be a guest moderator
of the post-seminar discussion.
* Invite faculty to attend
and tie the presentations into their courses during the discussions.
Begin
the Q and A session with remarks from faculty members relating the presentation
to their classes.
* Consider a debate between two respected
faculty members on the most important and/or provocative issue raised
by the presentation.
* Following the seminar presentations,
donate the DVDs to the campus media center and promote their use as reference
materials or as class resources.
* Use the presentations to
inspire creative programs for chapter members, such as a Readers Theater
performance.
* Promote the Honors Seminars in your region by
developing a regional meeting program incorporating issues from the presentations
and discussions.
* Work with the campus Honors Program classes
to incorporate the Honors Seminars into this curriculum.
*
Work with the college's leadership or student development program to use
the seminar presentations to raise questions about determining problems
and devising solutions.
