Mississippi Chapter Receives National Award from Keep America Beautiful
Members of the Phi Theta Kappa chapter from Hinds Community College, Raymond
Campus, in Mississippi, were recognized this week for winning first place
in a National Awards competition sponsored by Keep America Beautiful.
Barbara
Dorr, Executive Director of Keep Mississippi Beautiful, presented an
engraved silver bowl to college representatives in brief ceremonies at
the Center for Excellence, Phi Theta Kappa's International Headquarters.
Keep
America Beautiful is Phi Theta Kappa's International
Service Program partner.
"Thank you for helping keep
Mississippi beautiful" said Dorr, in praising the work of the Hinds chapter.
She also commented on the tremendous contributions that Phi Theta Kappa
chapters overall have made through the partnership with Keep America Beautiful.
The
Hinds chapter won first place in the Litter Prevention catagory through
their efforts to establish the campus as a smoke-free area. A semester-long
research project focused on promoting tobacco awareness and cessation
programs, as well as proper disposal of cigarettes.
Due to this
effort, smoking areas have been designated on the Hinds campus, and the
chapter is continuing their campaign to make the area smoke-free, said
advisor Kristi Sather-Smith.
Also winning first
places in the National Keep America Beautiful competition were
the Phi Theta Kappa chapters at Tidewater Community College, Norfolk Campus,
in Virginia; and Danville Area Community College, Illinois.
