New Convention Event, "Honors in Action Academy," Open to All Members
Phi Theta Kappa's 2009 pre-Convention events to provide instruction for
Society leaders have been redesigned, and will now be open to all members,
as well as advisors and chapter and regional officers.
The three
conferences, formerly for advisors, chapter officers and regional officers,
have been restructured into one event, the Honors in Action Academy. Separate
breakouts will be scheduled based on participants' roles, but joint sessions
are planned to promote networking and communication.
Academy
sessions and projects will focus on Honors
in Action, research-based activities related to the Honors Study
Topic, that incorporate scholarship, leadership, service and fellowship.
Advisors are encouraged to bring their chapter officers and
any members who wish to participate. Members currently not holding office
but who plan to seek chapter, regional and international offices would
especially benefit. Registration for chapter and regional officers and
members to attend the Academy is $85. There is no charge for advisors. Online registration
opens January 1. Convention dates are April 16-18, 2009, at the Gaylord
Texan Resort and Convention Center in Grapevine, Texas.
The
Academy will begin Wednesday, April 15, one day prior to the Convention,
and will include interactive Honors in Action projects in the afternoon,
in partnership with Keep Grapevine Beautiful. Transportation will be
provided to off-site locations. Water, snacks and restrooms will be available
at all sites.
On Wednesday Academy participants should come
dressed for the day in casual clothing - long pants, closed-toe shoes and
t-shirts. There will be no time to change after the Academy begins. Chapters
and regions may elect to form non-competitive teams and wear identifying
t-shirts.
The Academy will conclude prior to lunch on Thursday,
April 16.
