Seventeen of Phi Theta Kappa's most talented writers have been selected for the 2002 edition of Nota Bene, Phi Theta Kappa's literary honors anthology. More than 1,000 entries were received for the 2002 edition. In addition to being published, five members were chosen to receive prestigious Nota Bene scholarships, judged the best overall entries. Cherie Santos-Greenfield, a member from Wenatchee Valley College in Wenatchee, Washington, received the $1,000 Citation Award Scholarship for her essay, "The Roost Regime." Reynolds Scholarship Award winners, who receive $500 stipends, included Elisabeth Enagonio, a member from Prince George's Community College in Largo, Maryland, for her poem "After the After-Hours Club"; Kwanza Milow, a member from Mott Community College in Flint, Michigan, for his essay "Life in a Bottle"; Steve Moffit, a member from Neosho County Community College in Chanute, Kansas, for his essay story "The Day I Lost Jesus in my Backyard: or How Christ Got Stuck in the Mud"; and Andrew Parks, a member from Elgin Community College in Elgin, Illinois, for his short story, "Three." "I never wrote more than a grocery list before I went to school," said Citation Award Scholarship winner Cherie Santos-Greenfield. "Truly, my professors at Wenatchee Valley College deserve most of the credit by being so supportive of me and my writing. I am fortunate to live in a country where my gender and my race do not prohibit me from doing what I love. "I am wildly excited about the Citation scholarship, as it will enable me to take more English classes," continued Santos-Greenfield. "I love to write - I write at least six hours a day after I finish my homework. My goal is to teach students whom English is a second language to write better so they have a better chance to succeed in college." Taking its name from the Latin expression "note well," Nota Bene was first published in 1994 to promote the ideal of excellence in writing for Phi Theta Kappa members. The anthology is distributed to more than 1,700 libraries nationwide and abroad, affirming the commitment to academic excellence displayed by the community college arena.
