Eligible Advisors Encouraged to Apply for Mosal Awards

Phi Theta Kappa chapter advisors with three years of service as of April 5 have a unique opportunity to grow personally and professionally through projects funded by the Mosal Award Program.

As many as 10 advisors may be selected to receive Mosal Awards, which carry stipends of $5,000 each. Mosal Awards are announced at the Association of Chapter Advisors Luncheon, to be held during the 2008 International Convention in Philadelphia. Recipients also receive the Mosal Award Medallion.

The Mosal Award Program provides financial support to advisors wishing to implement and complete projects relating to personal professional growth - defined as "advancement, improvement, increase in knowledge, or general progress towards maturity in one's profession beyond earned degrees, pursued out of the individual desire for betterment or personal interest in the undertaking."

The Mosal Award application form is available online. The submission deadline is February 22.

In 2007, Mosal Awards were presented to advisors Jeff Edwards and Dr. Brent Kendrick.

Edwards' award-winning proposal was Touring History: Tracing the Evolution of Political Economy in Scotland, England, and France. Edwards is a professor of economics at Holmes Community College in Mississippi and at Cy-Fair College in Texas.

Dr. Kendrick, an English professor at Lord Fairfax Community College in Virginia, received a Mosal Award for Celebrating 400 Years of Virginia Writers: John Smith to Lee Smith.

Visit the Phi Theta Kappa Mosal Award website to read the 2007 award-winning proposals.

Advisors whose terms began on or before April 5, 2005, (three years before the date of the Awards Ceremony at the 2008 International Convention), are eligible to apply. Potential applicants who are unsure of their advisor start-date should contact Phi Theta Kappa Headquarters to determine whether or not they are eligible.

Unlike other Phi Theta Kappa recognition programs for chapter advisors, the Mosal Award Program bases selection on growth potential rather than achievements in Phi Theta Kappa programming.

The Mosal Awards honor the memory of the late Dr. Margaret Mosal, Phi Theta Kappa's former Executive Director.
