Best-Selling Author Amy Tan Delivers Joint Session Keynote Address
Amy Tan, the acclaimed best-selling author of The Joy Luck Club,
will give the keynote address for the joint session of the Phi Theta Kappa
and American Association of Community Colleges Convention, April 5 in
Philadelphia. The joint session will open the AACC annual convention,
which continues through April 8 in Philadelphia. Phi
Theta Kappa Convention dates are April 3-5.
Tan, a
graduate of San Jose City College, will be recognized as one of AACC's 2008
Outstanding Alumni.
Born in the U.S. to immigrant parents from
China, Tan rejected her mother's expectations that she become a doctor
and concert pianist. She chose to write fiction instead. Her novels include
The Kitchen God's Wife, The Hundred Secret Senses, The
Bonesetter's Daughter and Saving Fish from Drowning, all
New York Times bestsellers.The Joy Luck Club was also made into
a motion picture.
Tan is currently writing a new novel and creating
the libretto for The Bonesetter's Daughter, which will premiere
in September with the San Francisco Opera.
In lighter projects,
Tan plays "second tambourine" with the literary garage band the Rock Bottom
Remainders, whose members include fellow authors Stephen King, Dave Barry
and Scott Turow. Their annual gigs have raised more than $1 million for literacy
programs.
