Phi Theta Kappa Receives State Recycling Honor
Phi Theta Kappa has been named 2009 Non-Profit Recycler of the Year by the
Mississippi Recycling Coalition.
The Society received an
Environmental Hero award from the Coalition in recognition of efforts
to promote and encourage Phi Theta Kappa's 1,250-plus chapters to implement
campus recycling projects and other programs to improve their communities'
environments.
"Phi Theta Kappa is committed to environmental
stewardship locally at the Center for Excellence and on an international
scale. In 2009 11,700 members from 503 chapters volunteered 72,000 hours
to sustainability projects, positively affecting more than 1 million
people. We accept this honor on behalf of our staff at the Center for Excellence
and Phi Theta Kappa chapters around the world," said Society Executive
Director Rod Risley.
The Mississippi Recycling Coalition
is a consortium of recycling companies, local governments, state agencies
and other interested organizations in the State of Mississippi. MRC promotes
and encourages responsible solid waste management through various methods
such as source reduction, reuse, recycling and composting programs.
Coalition
president Kristi Sather-Smith and board member Mark Williams made the
presentation. Sather-Smith is Honors Director and Phi Theta Kappa advisor
at Hinds Community College. Williams is associated with the Mississippi
