Chosen by The Coca-Cola Company as an official torchbearer, Jackson journeyed to Memphis with his family, members and alumni from his Phi Theta Kappa chapter, as well as other Shawnee Community College students and faculty. Torchbearers were chosen for their community service, along with their ability to overcome adversity and inspire others to overcome, achieve and serve. Jackson's two-block run was the most thrilling of his life. "There were people honking, cheering and waving," said Jackson. "Everyone was cheering 'USA! USA!' as I passed. It was a tremendous opportunity, a huge honor and extremely exciting!" Jackson's route took him through downtown Memphis on the historic Beale Street. "I was told that when I held the torch, I represented peace. It was such a tremendous honor." The Coca-Cola Company purchased the torch for Jackson as a souvenir. Following the run, Memphis mayor Dr. Willie W. Herenton honored the torchbearers, including Jackson, in a ceremony at W.C. Handy Park. "I've never been more proud to be an American," said Jackson. "This was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I'm so grateful I was able to participate."
