Al Gore's 'An Inconvenient Truth' To Be Shown at Convention
Those attending Phi Theta Kappa's 2007 International Convention in Nashville,
Tennessee, will have the opportunity to view former Vice President Al Gore's
Oscar-nominated environmental documentary, An Inconvenient Truth.
The film is based on the best-selling book of the same name and
follows Gore's multimedia presentation about climate change and the effects
of global warming.
The film is the third highest-grossing documentary
in the United States and it has been nominated for two Academy Awards, including
Best Documentary Feature and Best Original Song - I Need to Wake Up
by Melissa Etheridge.
"There is much discussion regarding
the validity of the science used to draw conclusions that are presented
in An Inconvenient Truth. Phi Theta Kappa members will have the
opportunity to view the film, engage in dialogue and draw their own conclusions,"
said Phi Theta Kappa Executive Director Rod Risley.
"Providing
students with opportunities and experiences that challenge their thinking
are among the best benefits that this organization provides," Risley continued.
Gore will deliver his keynote address at the Third General Session
on Friday, April 13, at 2:30 pm. Following his speech, a panel of Phi Theta
Kappa members will pose questions to the former Vice President on domestic
and international issues.
The special screening of An Inconvenient
Truth will take place at 8:30 pm that same day. After the film, Phi Theta
Kappa Director of Leadership Development Programs Monika Byrd will facilitate
a conversation with attendees about the film and positive changes they
can make at their colleges and in their communities.
