Mississippi Chapter to Maintain College's New Walking Trail
Phi Theta Kappa members at Jones County Junior College in Mississippi will
help keep a new multi-purpose walking trail on campus beautiful while incorporating
the Society's 2006-08 International
Service Program, Operation Green: Improving Our Communities.
Chapter members will patrol the trail weekly to make sure it is litter free.
Chapter officers proposed the idea after they met with the college
president to discuss a grant the college would receive from the Mississippi
Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks for the new walking trail.
The trail would be one of many projects on campus designed to help enhance
the aesthetics of the college.
Once the trail is completed in
the fall, the chapter will place decorative waste receptacles along the
one-half mile path. They will also help keep it litter free by having members
walk the trail twice a week to pick up trash.
A kick-off walk with
representatives from Mississippi's Let's Go Walking campaign is in the
works to help promote the new walking trail. The chapter also plans to hand
out free pedometers to participants at the event.
Phi Theta
Kappa announced its partnership with Keep
America Beautiful at the Society's 2006 International Convention
in Seattle, Washington. Since the development of Operation Green,
members have implemented various education, recycling, beautification
and litter prevention initiatives in their communities.
