Celebrate Independence Sustainably, All Summer Long

Keep America Beautiful, Phi Theta Kappa's International Service Program partner, calls on chapters and members to mark the nation's birthday, and our obligation to the entire global environment, with eight summer "clean and green" ideas from their Community Matters e-Newsletter:

* During your summer outings, don't be a litter bug! Do your part by picking up litter you see and throwing it in a trash can.

* Taking a road trip to the beach or park? Keep a litter bag in your vehicle to dispose of litter properly. "Disposable" plastic bags, if you have them, make great litter bags AND are an easy way to practice "reuse" (along with "reduce" and "recycle").

* While getting that summer tune-up on your car, remember your tires. Check for proper inflation to save gas and emissions. If you're getting new tires, be sure to recycle your old ones!

* When heading to the grocery store before your summer barbecues, remember to take a reusable bag instead of a disposable one. If you have disposable bags, be sure to reuse or recycle them!

* Staying hydrated in the summer heat is important. Consider using a reusable water bottle. For big outings, take a larger water cooler and use it to refill your bottles.

* Enjoying a beverage at your friend's holiday bash? Be sure to recycle that can or bottle.

* If you acquire a new cell phone, don't forget to recycle your old phone. Use Keep America Beautiful's downloadable mailing label to return cell phones and wireless equipment for reuse and recycling - no postage necessary if mailed in the United States. Click here for instructions.

* Looking for a fun summer activity for your friends that will help the planet look more beautiful? Plant a Liberty Garden in your community! Here's how to get started.
