41 Members Receive Jack Kent Cooke Scholarships
Forty-one Phi Theta Kappa members have received 2008 Jack Kent Cooke Foundation
Scholarships, which provide up to $30,000 per year for baccalaureate degree
studies.
"Congratulations to these outstanding members,
whose exemplary scholarship, demonstrated leadership and commitment
to service has been rewarded by the Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship Program,"
said Phi Theta Kappa Executive Director Rod Risley. "We are proud to note
that 41 of the 46 recipients are Phi Theta Kappa members. We salute the Jack
Kent Cooke Foundation for their generosity in providing financial support
to these deserving two-year college students."
"And we are
extremely pleased that the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation has decided to help
these undergraduate scholars continue their education past the baccalaureate
degree. Beginning this year, all undergraduate scholars will receive
scholarships of $50,000 each for graduate studies," Risley continued.
"A
majority of the 2008 Jack Kent Cooke Scholars have held leadership positions
within Phi Theta Kappa, and have received Guistwhite and All-USA Academic
Team awards as well," Risley concluded.
The Jack Kent Cooke
Foundation annually invites community colleges to nominate two students
each for the Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Scholarships, the nation's
largest private scholarship for two-year college transfer students.
Since 2000 the Foundation has provided resources and support to high-achieving
students with limited financial means.
"At the top of our community
college classes is a tremendous talent pool, largely untapped by elite
colleges," said Joshua Wyner, Executive Vice President of the Jack Kent
Cooke Foundation. "Many of these students attend community college not
because they lack the academic talent for a four-year institution, but
because they lack the financial resources. While some top institutions
- from Amherst College to UC-Berkeley - have caught on, others are missing
out. The reality is that community college transfer students are often
the most determined, high-achieving students on four-year campuses.
What's more, they bring much needed diversity to our most selective higher
education institutions."
