Louisiana College Holds First Induction Since Katrina
The Phi Theta Kappa chapter at Nunez Community College in Chalmette, Louisiana,
welcomed 13 new inductees in May, the first new members since the campus
was decimated by Hurricane Katrina almost four years ago.
Chalmette,
two miles from New Orleans, was flooded by 15-foot waters from the storm
surge of Hurricane Katrina on August 29, 2005. Most of the town's buildings
and homes were judged unsavable due to damage from flood waters and oil spills.
Every
building on the Nunez campus was flooded, causing the college to temporarily
relocate to an area high school. After extensive renovations the college
reopened the Chalmette campus in January 2006.
Advisor Dr.
Deborah Barbe' led efforts to reactivate the chapter, and organized the
May 18 induction. Dr. Steven Berrien, Nunez Vice Chancellor for Academic
Affairs, provided opening remarks. West Williamson, Phi Theta Kappa's
Director of Chapter Relations, was guest speaker. Mississippi/Louisiana
Regional Coordinator Amy Wolgamott was a special guest.
