International President Speaks on Behalf of Scholarship Recipients

Phi Theta Kappa's International President Edgar Romero was recently chosen to represent students at a reception honoring recipients of LaGuardia Community College Foundation's Innovative Leadership Award.

Romero spoke on behalf of students who have received Foundation-funded scholarships. The presentation was held at the United Nations Building in New York.

"The financial support has allowed me to take a deep breath and keep on going. With the support of the Foundation, students like me can keep on dreaming and realizing that getting an education is not an impossible reality," said Romero, a native of Venezuela who is majoring in Social Sciences and Humanities at LaGuardia Community College.

LaGuardia has been nationally recognized as an innovator in educating students who are not primary English speakers. A part of the City College of New York, LaGuardia currently enrolls students from 160 countries.

Since its establishment six years ago, the LaGuardia Community College Foundation has raised over $2.5 million, provided over $450,000 in scholarships to nearly 1,000 students, and has set up dedicated funds that provide student scholarships and other support, according to Foundation Executive Director E. Ramone Segree, LaGuardia's Vice President for Institutional Advancement.
