Gore Takes Impassioned Global Warming Message to Congress

When Phi Theta Kappa International Convention speaker and former Vice President Al Gore testified on Capitol Hill this week about the dangers of global warming, people started lining up as early as 7 a.m. to get a glimpse of him.

After Gore's defeat in the 2000 Presidential Election, the longtime political figure found a new calling - the environment. He has emerged as an international spokesman and crusader to combat global warming, which he labels a moral crisis rather than a political issue.

Gore's best-selling book, An Inconvenient Truth, became the basis of the film of the same name, which won the 2007 Academy Award for best documentary. An Inconvenient Truth is the third-highest grossing documentary film of all time, and also won the Oscar for Best Original Song.

Gore has also been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

"This is the most dangerous crisis we have ever faced," Gore was quoted in the Los Angeles Times as saying when he addressed House and Senate panels. "This problem is burning a hole in the top of the world. We need to turn the thermostat back down before that melts."

"There is a sense of hope in the country that this United States Congress will rise to the occasion and present meaningful solutions to this crisis," he said. "Congress is a repository of hopes and dreams of people all across this Earth."

Gore will be the keynote speaker at the Third General Session of Phi Theta Kappa's International Convention, scheduled April 12-14 at the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center in Nashville, Tennessee. Gore will speak Friday afternoon. A special showing of An Inconvenient Truth is scheduled Friday evening, with a discussion following. Monika Byrd, Phi Theta Kappa's Director of Leadership Development Programs, will serve as moderator. Illinois Regional Coordinator David Elder will co-moderate.
