Phi Theta Kappa - Honor Society

Georgetown University Offers "Semester in Washington Program" Dean's Scholarships to Members

Georgetown University will offer up to 15 Dean's Scholarships to their summer Semester in Washington Program exclusively to members of Phi Theta Kappa.

The program affords undergraduate students a unique opportunity to spend an exciting summer semester as an intern in Washington, D.C., while living and studying at Georgetown University in one of five program areas:

American Politics and Public Affairs
International Affairs
Religion and Politics
Health Care Administration and Policy
Law and Society

The summer term extends from June 1 - August 6. Students will work as interns up to five days a week and take an accompanying academic seminar, which meets once a week in the mornings, for a total of three credits.

Scholarships of $1,043 each (cost of one credit) are available to Phi Theta Kappa members. The remaining expenses for the students include $4,373 for tuition and board, and $350 (estimated) for books. A $400 enrollment deposit, which is non-refundable and will go fully toward the tuition, is due upon admission into the program. Students are also responsible for transportation to and from Washington, and for their food, transportation and personal expenses while participating in the program.

Scholarships are available to Phi Theta Kappa members currently enrolled in their community colleges, who post a GPA of 3.7 or above, and who have completed the equivalent of their freshman year (30 credits) by the program start date.

Phi Theta Kappa members should complete the Program Application and a Scholarship Application. Members should submit two letters of recommendation - one from their Phi Theta Kappa advisor with proof of membership (Member ID number) and one from an academic or professional contact. Students also need to submit an official transcript (in a signed, sealed envelope). When completing the application form, please mark "Other" and state "Phi Theta Kappa" when completing the section asking "How did you hear about the program?" This will allow Georgetown University to identify Phi Theta Kappans more easily.

The deadline for applying for the Phi Theta Kappa Dean's Scholarship is April 5.

After a student is accepted for the program and has paid the non-refundable $400 enrollment deposit, they may access the Semester in Washington Program database listing of some 400 organizations and internships. The program's internship advisor will assist students in finding an internship matching their individual academic and professional interests.

Assistant Dean of the Program Barbara Wolf, a Phi Theta Kappa alumni and past International Officer, will attend the Orlando Convention to interview prospective candidates. Interviews may also be conducted by phone for candidates not attending the Convention.
