Phi Theta Kappa Member Named Florida College Student of the Year

Christiana "Chrissie" Prichard, the Phi Theta Kappa Leadership Officer at Chipola Junior College, is the winner of the prestigious 2003 Florida College Student of the Year Award.

Prichard and 19 other Finalists and Honorable Mention Winners were recognized in an award ceremony and press conference, held on April 11, in the Florida Capitol Building. The group will share a $65,000 scholarship pool.

Prichard was selected as the Overall Winner from 156 applicants in the annual scholarship program sponsored by Florida Leader, SunTrust Education Loans, and Office Depot. The program recognizes students who support themselves financially through college, excel academically, and are involved in community service and political activism.

Among her many accomplishments, Chrissie led her chapter to host a "Leaders of Promise Conference" for 500 area sophomores and juniors. The conference offered activities to help the students identify leadership qualities and to become servant leaders by empowering others. She serves as the co-captain of the award-winning Chipola Junior College cheerleading squad and uses her talents to help young chearleaders in the community enhance their skills. In 2002, Chrissie received the Phi Theta Kappa Leaders of Promise Scholarship to continue her education at the two-year college. She then received the presigious Phi Theta Kappa Guistewhite scholarship in 2003. Chrissie was also named to the 2003 All-USA Academic First Team by USA Today and received the New Century Scholar award as the top student among the All-Florida Academic Team nominees.

"Being a member of Phi Theta Kappa, specifically being our chapter's Leadership Officer, has given me the opportunity to serve my college and community in so many ways," says Chrissie. "No other organization on campus is as involved and active as the Nu Chi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. Every week we are presented with new ideas and opportunities for service, which makes it really easy to develop leadership potential and become involved in community and campus events. Phi Theta Kappa has been the driving force behind all of the leadership and service activities on our campus, and I certainly would not be the type of person or leader that I am today with out Phi Theta Kappa."

Six other Phi Theta Kappa members were among the Finalists and Honorable Mention Winners of the 2003 Florida College Student of the Year Award Program. Brittany Marie Jowers of Florida Community College at Jacksonville - Kent Campus, Vincent Lau Chan of Miami-Dade Community College - North Campus, and Jane Linsey Pope of Central Florida Community College were each named as Finalists.
