Saipan College Charters New Phi Theta Kappa Chapter
One of Phi Theta Kappa's newest chapters is also one of its most distant -
located at Northern Marianas College on the Western Pacific island of Saipan,
half a world away from most of the Society's campuses.
Beta Lambda
Psi, the Northern Marianas College chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, received
its charter and inducted its first members in April. Phi Theta Kappa's Associate
Director Mike Watson represented the organization during the chartering
ceremony. The Phi Theta Kappa chapter is the College's first academic honors
organization.
Sixteen charter members were inducted, and
the chapter's two advisors, Ms. Angie Sills and Dr. Debra Cabrera, were
awarded honorary membership. College president Dr. Ken Wright, who became
an honorary member of Phi Theta Kappa at a previous college, accepted the
charter from Watson. A Phi Theta Kappa alumna and charter member of the Guam
Community College chapter, Barbara Merfalen, also spoke at the induction.
Charter
members include Absinthe Algaier, James (Jimmy) Arriola, Amy Sue Bartlett,
Shahzad (Judd) Chaudhry, Arlene Dela Cruz, Sebastian Deleon Guerrero,
Joaquin (Jack) Kiyoshi, Zhi Yu Liang, Vanessa Mobel, Glenna Palacios,
Agnes Ripple, Laura Saiki, Renae Villegas, Joshua Weinstein, Annie Rima
Yamagishi and Kuan Yuan.
In spite of the distance separating
them from most of Phi Theta Kappa, the honor students at Northern Marianas
College hope to have an active chapter and participate in such programs
as Project Graduation
and The Pinnacle
Scholarship Awards Program.
Recognition of their
academic excellence was very important to the charter members. "Phi Theta
Kappa gives Northern Marianas College the opportunity to ignite a tradition
of scholarship and service while providing leadership and fellowship,"
said Amy Bartlett.
