Phi Theta Kappa's 2008 Honors Institute will be held June 16-21 at San Francisco State University in California, and will focus on the 2008-2010 Honors Study Topic, The Paradox of Affluence: Choices, Challenges, and Consequences. Complete program details are available on the Honors Institute website.

Among the many opportunities for learning, growth and fellowship at this event is a special presentation on Honors in Action, Phi Theta Kappa's new initiative that provides opportunities for learning and growth through projects implementing two, three, or all four of the Society's Hallmarks.

Headquarters staff members Susan Edwards, Director of Honors Programs; Monika Byrd, Director of Leadership Development Programs; and Jennifer Stanford, Director of Programs, who oversees the International Service Program, will lead Institute attendees in an examination of the Honors in Action process, which is based on integrating the Hallmarks of Scholarship, Leadership, Service and Fellowship.

Honors in Action project ideas vary in scope and may be adopted by individual honors students or Phi Theta Kappa members, honors classes, or Phi Theta Kappa chapters.

The Honors Program Guide, now available online, includes a section on Honors in Action projects for each of the 10 issues related to the Honors Study Topic.

"The suggested Honors in Action ideas provide avenues for honors students to enrich their scholarly endeavors with the interdisciplinary exploration of a timely topic and then apply their knowledge as servant-leaders in the college and the community," said Edwards. "Chapters and individuals are encouraged to use the Honors Program Guide to create their own activities that implement Honors in Action."

Edwards said that the issues within the Honors Study Topic and the Honors in Action ideas are designed to initiate interdisciplinary scholarly inquiry and research, and should incorporate two or more Hallmarks. "Study of any of the issues related to The Paradox of Affluence should include opportunities to lead and serve," she said.
