Hungry for Intellectual Nourishment? Don't Miss Honors Institute
Limited space is still available for Phi Theta Kappa's 2009 Honors Institute,
an experience that is unmatched in benefits for both members and advisors.
Here's
more on the Institute experience, from an advisor who has attended Honors
Institutes for many years:
"I do not know of a Phi Theta Kappa
advisor who is not constantly busy," says Gisela Ables, from Houston Community
College in Texas, who has also served as a Faculty Scholar.
"While
we are up to our ears in work and projects, we seldom have time for our own intellectual
nourishment. We can turn to a good book or article to read, but we seldom really
get to sit down with our peers and just haggle over our views, knowledge,
or even our intellectual prejudices.
"The one place where we
are nurtured, encouraged to listen to other views; mull things over; and
at the same time enjoy the pleasure of the company of friends is the Phi Theta
Kappa Honors Institute.
"I always leave the Honors Institute
feeling that I have walked away from a smorgasbord of new knowledge. It is
a satisfying experience that I look forward to each year," Ables said.
She
also reflected on the value of members participating:
"How
often do you get to play, make friends, and learn new and interesting things
at the same time? The only place I can think of is the Phi Theta Kappa Honors
Institute.
"Here you are listening to speakers whom you have
heard on the radio, seen on television, or read in a major national publication
and you are actually talking with them. You get to ask questions, agree or
disagree with them and they listen. Wow! Where else does this happen?
"Such
a mix makes for a rich experience that I would recommend to everyone," Ables
concluded.
Honors Institute dates are June 22-26, at the University
of Richmond in Richmond, Virginia. Visit the Honors
Institute website for speaker information and to download a Registration
Form.
