International Vice President Uses Poetry to Raise Funds for Hurricane Relief
Since August 29, three major hurricanes have struck the Gulf Coast, causing
widespread destruction in Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas. Alabama
and Florida have also been impacted by this devastating hurricane season.
Here's a new way to help!
International Vice President J.T.
Bullock, a performance poet, is offering his CD Smart
Aleck for sale, with all proceeds going to Phi Theta Kappa's Hurricane
Relief Fund.
Although he suffered no personal losses, JT felt
a personal connection to the hurricane victims.
All of the Gulf
States belong to Phi Theta Kappa's Division II, which J.T. serves as Vice
President. A native of New Orleans, he has family and friends there, including
his father, whose home was destroyed. J.T. also feels deeply for the countless
number of community college students in the area, who have lost family members,
their homes, their jobs, and their chance for an education.
J.T.
joined the 2005-06 International Officer Team in establishing Phi Theta
Kappa's Hurricane
Relief Fund, a way for community college students to help other
affected and displaced students. He is now combining his desire to help
with his unique talents as a performance poet.
J.T. is marketing
Smart Aleck, for only $5.00 with 100 percent of proceeds donated to the Society’s “Students Helping Students” relief effort. The disc contains his well-known Honors Study Topic candidate speech, Pop Goes the People, and several other tracks, including a Phi Theta Kappa favorite, Stardust.
Growing
up in New Orleans, a younger J.T. turned to poetry to combat depression.
Eventually he became involved in the "spoken word" poetry movement, and
for the past five years he has competed nationally in poetry "slams" - timed,
audience-judged competitions.
Smart Aleck has been described
as "pure poetry in motion. These recordings represent a surreal blend of
dreams and reality that challenge listeners to look beyond the seemingly
ordinary experiences of their own lives. J.T.'s words speak of tragedy,
triumph, and universal truths about the human condition. His album will
definitely please those familiar with his work and excite others who have
never heard him before."
