Texas Chapter Awards Honorary Membership to United States Secretary of Education

The Phi Theta Kappa chapter at Grayson County College in Texas presented a certificate of honorary membership to United States Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings during her recent visit to the college.

The chapter honored Secretary Spellings for her accomplishments in education, including her involvement and contributions in establishing the "No Child Left Behind" Act. Chapter president John Epperson and vice-president Ginger Hughes presented the honorary membership certificate to Secretary Spellings.

Chapter advisor Ron Velten said that awarding Secretary Spellings an honorary membership in Phi Theta Kappa emphasized the values of academic excellence embraced by the Society.

Before being named Secretary of Education, Spellings served as Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy. While serving in that position she assisted in creating the "No Child Left Behind" Act and also provided support to the President's domestic agenda by developing policies on immigration, health care and education.

Secretary Spellings is currently serving as the 8th U.S. Secretary of Education and has chaired the bipartisan Commission on the Future of Higher Education, an initiative that has recommended education and teacher reforms.
