International Convention Torch Travels Through Texas

Crowds cheer as the symbolic flame makes the journey from Paris to Odessa to Athens... Athens, Texas, that is. This torch is now making its way across the Lone Star state to kick off the 87th Phi Theta Kappa International Convention in Grapevine, Texas, (between Dallas and Fort Worth) on April 14, 2005.

The official Phi Theta Kappa International Convention Torch is sent to the host region each year, where it travels from college to college to promote the next International Convention. Participating chapters will be featured in a video that is shown during the Convention's Opening Ceremonies. There the four International Vice Presidents of Phi Theta Kappa will light the cauldron as the International President calls the meeting to order, symbolizing the official opening of the 87th International Convention.

"There was so much enthusiasm and energy during the torch lighting ceremony," said Texas Regional President Arthur Vargas of Austin Community College. "We are 'Tex-cited' to be the host region for the 2005 Phi Theta Kappa International Convention. I would like to offer a big, heartfelt welcome for Phi Theta Kappans all around the world to the Friendship State!"

"It is an honor to be hosting this year's Convention," said Dr. Yolanda Romero, advisor for North Lake College in Irving. "We are looking forward to providing some 'good old Texas hospitality' for our Phi Theta Kappa family from all over the world."

The International Convention will be held April 14-16, 2005 at the new Gaylord Texan Resort in Grapevine. The theme for this year's event is "Catch a Shining Star." Speakers will include former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Grammy-winning singer Patti Labelle. In addition, the International Convention will offer traditional features such as the Advisors Education Pre-Conference, Chapter and Regional Officer Academies, Educational Forums, International Officer Elections, and Hallmark Awards Ceremony.
