Phi Theta Kappa to Honor Outstanding Teacher Education Programs at Community Colleges
Five exceptional community college teacher education programs will be
honored by Phi Theta Kappa at the annual National Association of Community
College Teacher Education Programs (NACCTEP) Conference on March 2, 2007,
in New Orleans, Louisiana. The chosen schools will receive national recognition
and their programs will be highlighted in a monograph sent to presidents
of community colleges nationwide.
As the number of education
students beginning their academic careers in community college grows,
the need for enhanced teacher education programs has increased significantly
over the years. NACCTEP's mission is to support these programs by increasing
awareness of the community college's role in quality teacher education
programs.
NACCTEP's conference gives colleges the opportunity
to showcase their current work and share their experiences and ideas with
other schools.
Phi Theta Kappa will recognize five competitively
selected community college teacher education programs at the opening
ceremony of the conference this year. The teacher preparation programs
selected as exemplary programs are honored for best demonstrating the
values of leadership, service, scholarship and professional development.
A recipient honored last year says the award helped strengthen
awareness of their school's program.
"The award meant a lot
for our program. It gave us recognition for the excellent preparation we
are providing for teachers, as well as all of the effort and enthusiasm that
our faculty and administration have put into this," said Dr. Meg Moss, Teacher
Education Coordinator at Pellissippi State Technical Community College
in Tennessee.
Dr. Moss says publicity from the award helped
recruit new students to their program.
Community colleges
interested in entering this competition may do so by visiting the Society's
website for complete information
and a downloadable
application form. The deadline for application is Friday, December
1, 2006.
All entries will be reviewed by a five-member Selection
Committee representing the teacher education community and selected
colleges will be notified of their award by Friday, December 15, 2006.
