Chapters Raise More Than $184,000 Through Relay For Life
Phi Theta Kappa chapters raised more than $184,000 through Relay For Life
participation during the 2006-07 academic year! Relay For Life is the American
Cancer Society's signature event to raise awareness and funds to support
cancer research, education, advocacy and patient services.
According
to reports, some 169 Phi Theta Kappa chapters sponsored Relay events or
fielded a team for a community Relay. Fourteen of the 169 chapters were participating
in first-time events. The exact total raised by Phi Theta Kappa through
Relay participation currently stands at $184,408.66, and collections
are still being reported.
Chapters that have conducted Relay
events but have not yet submitted totals may report
online through September.
Casey Maliszewski, Phi
Theta Kappa's current International President, and Corey Lily, Vice President
of Service at Jefferson State Community College's Pi Pi Chapter in Alabama,
represented Phi Theta Kappa at Relay For Life's recent National Collegiate
Leadership Summit in Dallas. Phi Theta Kappa was recognized for outstanding
participation as a Youth Partner in Relay For Life.
The Phi Theta
Kappa representatives attended a series of workshops on team building
and conflict resolution, as well as topics relating to Relay For Life implementation,
such as the importance of recognizing survivors, fundraising ideas and
event promotion.
Speakers included John R. Seffrin, PhD, Chief
Executive Officer of the American Cancer Society. The Summit audience
also saw a simulated Luminaria Ceremony, a Relay event honoring survivors
and remembering persons who lost their battles with cancer.
Phi
Theta Kappa's relationship with the American Cancer Society began in 2002,
when ACS became the honor society's partner in Conquering Cancer,
the International Service Program for 2002-04. Due to the enthusiastic
reception by chapters, and the landmark contributions made to the fight
against cancer, Conquering Cancer was extended for an additional
two years. In 2006, Relay For Life was incorporated into the Society's civic
engagement initiatives. Phi Theta Kappa has twice been honored as a top
collegiate contributor to Relay For Life.
The American Cancer
Society received the Alliance for Excellence in Education Distinguished
Partner Award at Phi Theta Kappa's 2007 International Convention in Nashville.
Attending the Convention to accept the award from Phi Theta Kappa's Executive
Director Rod A. Risley were ACS dignitaries Dr. Anna Johnson-Winegar,
Chairperson of the American Cancer Society Board of Directors; Reuel Johnson,
National Vice President of Relay For Life; and Kristen Solt, Vice President
for Hope Lodge, a network of free, temporary housing facilities operated
by ACS for cancer patients undergoing treatment.
Phi Theta
Kappa chapters have a set a goal to raise $10 million for ACS by 2018, when
the honor society will celebrate the 100th anniversary of its founding.
Currently the chapters have raised well over $2 million toward their goal.
