Butte College
Roger Ekins, Advisor
Phi Theta Kappa members at Butte College in California made a special effort to reach out to students who are coping with financial hardships, and to first-generation college students. They were aided by Butte’s Extended Opportunity Programs and Services, an agency that helps low-income students, and students who are the first in their families to attend college. The EOPS Office agreed to pay the entire fees for any of their students who qualified for membership. Chapter officers telephoned all qualified EOPS students, and achieved a 100 percent acceptance from each student they reached. According to advisor Roger Ekins, the EOPS Office cited Phi Theta Kappa membership as an important measure of their students’ success. The Butte College chapter’s efforts earned them a Silver and a Platinum Award in the 2006 Pinnacle Scholarship Award Program.
