Better World Books is a social venture, a for-profit business whose primary objective is social profit. Unlike a traditional business that works for profit for its owners, companies like Better World Books mark success by how well they address a social problem. At Better World Books, the mission is to promote literacy as a means of change in the world.
Since its Inception in 2002, Better World Books Has:
- Been active in collecting books from over 1,000 colleges and universities and over 500 libraries in North America
- Saved more than 8 million pounds of books from landfills
- Raised more than $2 million for approximately 80 non-profits focused on literacy and education; specifically:
- Raised more than $1.2 million for Books For Africa
- Raised more than $203,000 for Room to Read
- Raised more than $233,000 for the National Center for Family Literacy
- Raised more than $8,000 for Worldfund
- Raised more than $65,000 locally for the Robinson Community Learning Center
- Donated more than 460,000 books to Books for Africa, the National Center for Family Literacy, and Feed the Children
- Contributed more than $690,000 to college and university service clubs and volunteers who have run book drives for BWB
