Chartering Phases
Chartering a Phi Theta Kappa chapter is a simple process that takes approximately
one college term to complete. Building the foundation is essential to the
continued success of your chapter and future members. Since you have your
own Phi Theta Kappa Headquarters staff contact and additional resources,
the completion of the four phases can run smoothly. Download the
chartering
checklist (Word document) to ensure phases are completed correctly.
Phase
1: Inquiry
The Inquiry Phase provides your college with
information regarding Phi Theta Kappa and confirms the college's commitment
to forming a chapter. Obtaining widespread support during this initial
stage is essential to establishing an active and successful Phi Theta Kappa
chapter. During this phase, colleges complete the Charter Petition and
Information Form and submit the one-time $500 charter fee. Headquarters
provides your official chapter name once these items are submitted.
Phase
2: Orientation
The Orientation Phase is the most important
phase. During this phase, your chapter's foundation is established. Each
advisor completes an advisor update form and the chapter customizes its
sample bylaws during this phase. Advisors receive orientation about reporting
members and your chapter hosts a prospective member orientation, conducted
by a Phi Theta Kappa representative. Students then accept membership and
are reported to Phi Theta Kappa Headquarters. Finally, interested students
are appointed and reported to serve as charter officers.
Phase
3: Chartering
The Chartering Phase completes the chartering
process and grants your college an official chapter of Phi Theta Kappa.
During this phase, your chapter inducts new members and sets a chapter development
goal. At the chartering ceremony the Phi Theta Kappa representative presents
your chapter with the official charter and plaque.
Phase
4: Post Chartering
During the Post Chartering Phase your
chapter is provided follow-up information and guidance to ensure the seamless
process of developing your chapter. The advisor completes the chartering
survey and is guided through the development process, including information
about regional conferences and Society programs.
