The Peace Corps

Life is calling. How far will you go?

The Peace Corps was established in 1961 by President John Kennedy as an organization made up of volunteers who would promote world peace and friendship. Today, more than 7,500 individuals volunteer in 71 countries across the globe.

Promoting participation in the public life of a community is not just a domestic idea; it is relevant internationally, especially as our diverse world becomes more globally connected. Civic engagement gives citizens a greater role in promoting the development of their local communities and that means communities in the United States and abroad.

In Florida, 54 community college students were recently trained for volunteer positions around the globe. In Nicaragua, community college graduates are encouraging natives to learn crop production and environmental protection. And throughout the world, community college students instruct locals on businesses practices, develop and purify water systems, and teach mathematics.

During the 2004 International Convention of Phi Theta Kappa, Peace Corps Regional Director for Africa, Mr. Henry McCoy, joined Executive Director Rod A. Risley in announcing opportunities for pursuing this civic meaning through service in the Peace Corps.
