The Community College Readership Program

Community College Readership Program

Part of the mission of Phi Theta Kappa is to create an intellectual climate for the exchange of ideas and interest in continuing academic excellence. The Community College Readership Program takes this mission well beyond the membership to all community college students. The purpose of The Community College Readership Program is to promote civic engagement and broadened awareness through newspaper readership among two-year college students. The newspapers feed student curiosity about pertinent world issues and increase awareness of news that affects their lives. Plus, the program promotes the habit of newspaper readership among community college students.

Newspaper readership as an instrument to promote civic engagement is a familiar concept in American higher education. Secondary schools and four-year institutions throughout this country have been actively engaged in stimulating civic interest among students through newspaper readership programs for over 70 years. Phi Theta Kappa and USA TODAY launched The Community College Readership Program as an initiative to promote newspaper readership to an equally important part of the nation's educational sphere - community colleges.
