Working with Advisors

This information last updated: November 23, 2009 5:51 PM

Phi Theta Kappa advisors often give their time, money, and much more to ensure that their students can take advantage of the opportunities associated with Phi Theta Kappa membership. Most do this with nothing more in return than the joy of witnessing their students grow as a result of their affiliation with the Society. Chapter officers can do much to assist the chapter advisor in their role.

Take the Lead

Nix new member stress for advisors by coordinating the mailing of invitation letters, placing phone calls to prospective members, and planning the orientation and induction ceremony. The Chapter Resources DVD, which includes a membership recruitment video, a PowerPoint presentation and highlights of Society programs, is an excellent resource for new member orientations.

Cooperation Counts

Focus on working together for the benefit of the chapter rather than becoming detoured by personal differences. Advisors prefer advising to refereeing any day.

Give Thanks

A little word of thanks hug can go a long way to make an advisor’s day. Tell advisors how much you appreciate their dedication!

Plan for Programs

Since Phi Theta Kappa’s programs are member-driven, advisors give input on programs, but members are responsible for the successful implementation of the programs. As officers you can lead the troops in orchestrating programs with pizzazz.

Build Lines of Communication

Keep advisors in the communication loop with regular progress reports on ongoing programs and plans for upcoming events as well as any challenges on the horizon for the chapter. Take the opportunity to ask your advisors how you can assist them.

Recognize Award-Worthy Advisors

Nominate advisors for Phi Theta Kappa’s awards recognizing outstanding advisors as part of the Hallmark Awards Program on the regional and international levels. Show them what a winner you think they are!
